Stargate Continuum 1080p Vs 720p

Do you find yourself constantly asking about which TV resolution to calibrate your video game console for? If so, you should give a bit more thought before selecting your output resolution. To understand this, first have a look at the difference between 1080p and 720p resolutions. 1080p: This is the highest definition that TVs will produce and utilizes 1920 x 1080 pixels or 1.080 megapixels (MP) for each frame (show). This is the standard information information that you'll see on any TV commercial. It can be viewed from as far as 15-20 feet away because its relatively small pixel size allows it to show intricate details in games and movies easily. 720p: The 720p resolution is slightly lower than 1080p which yields 1280 x 720 pixels or 0.7279 MP per frame (show). As you can see, the 720p resolution has more noticeable pixelization than 1080p. You will probably have to be closer to the TV to see exactly what's on the screen because of this. So, now that you know the difference between 1080p and 720p, how do they affect your game console? Well, if you're using a 1080i/60Hz signal then your game console will output a true 1080i or 120Hz signal. This means that there are 12 frames displayed per second (1/12 second = 0.166 seconds). This difference is too fast for the human eye to detect so you won't see a difference between 1080i/60Hz and 1080p. If you're using a 720p/60Hz signal then the game console will automatically detect this and reduce the frames per second by half (6 frames per second) in order to match the resolution. This means that there are 6 frames displayed per second (1/6 second = 0.166 seconds). This difference is too noticeable for the human eye to detect so you will notice when your game console has been set to 720p output because it will be slightly jerky when in motion. Some people have taken this to the next level by claiming they can verify which resolution is outputted by inspecting the picture. This is a complete hoax. All TV's display images with 3-2 pulldown (also called interlaced) in order to reduce bandwidth requirements. The video signal will appear to be displayed at 100% only when the image is being displayed on the screen but when displayed during motion will change to 50%, 25% or 10% depending on whether there are more or less than 3 frames per second per frame (show). There is no way for humans to detect this in any way at all. So, you ask then what is the correct resolution to output from your game console? In general it's best to leave it to the output resolution of the TV. Most TVs will automatically detect the input signal and display or output at a matching 100%. You will know for sure what you have set when movies or games are displayed during motion. If they are not jerky or blurry during motion then you can be sure you have set your game console to output at the correct resolution. It's important to note that some game consoles won't support all resolutions so make sure you check your game manual before attempting any changes with your game console.
